DESCRIPTION:Greeting fellow members. Once again\, we will be hosting a wine tasting at the club to support the Veterans appreciation day. This is a “no charge” event\, but it is intended to be a fundraiser. We ask that you donate or participate in our raffle.  The goal is to raise $500.00 to offset the costs to the club for our veteran’s cookout. \nLast year we made the tasting a Potluck as well. If you have a dish you would like to share\, please bring it. I will be pouring from 5:30-7:30\, but the night does not have to end there. If there is still food and wine on the table\, the fun should continue. Most importantly glassware at the club is always at a premium. Please bring your own glass. DESCRIPTION:SALEM — Where many may say “mission accomplished\,” Salem United says “time for the next mission.” \nThe 281st anniversary of Negro Election Day will run at Salem Willows this Saturday\, July 16 — the third Saturday in July\, as it has been scheduled for centuries. \nBut the nature of the event has transformed since Salem United organized to take it over in 2017\, as has attention on civil rights issues and ongoing racial unrest in the U.S. the past few years\, enflamed by the violent deaths of George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery and others. This has sparked a new generation of advocacy as well as nationwide recognition of Juneteenth. \n\nThis year\, Negro Election Day will become a state holiday\, and Salem United will be the subject of a documentary. and the organization is wasting no time building for the future. \n“We’re working on getting a center and museum\,” said Doreen Wade\, founder of Salem United. “And in the center\, we’re going to be working with some of the senators and state reps and organizations that cater to voting.” \nNegro Election Day was started in 1741\, during the era of colonial slavery\, when the Black community came together to elect a leader — a “King” — and lobbyist to advocate for its needs and rights. \nThe event ultimately moved to the Willows in 1880 and began taking on more of a family festival atmosphere. By the early 2000s\, with no real leader driving it\, it was also known as the Salem Black Picnic. The phrase\, Black picnic\, has more recently been strongly discouraged\, however\, given its historical connection to lynching of Black Americans — a history that has also more recently entered the broader public consciousness alongside growing awareness of Juneteenth. \nThe effort to make Negro Election Day a state holiday was recently approved by the Senate and successfully cleared the House on Tuesday\, ahead of an expected signing ceremony with Gov. Charlie Baker this weekend to make the date a permanent one across Massachusetts\, according to state Rep. Paul Tucker. \nIn 2022\, Negro Election Day is “going back to its origin\, what it’s always been since 2017 and 1741\,” Wade said. \n“The Making of Negro Election Day and Black King Pompey\,” an in-house documentary expected to hit the Salem Film Festival\, will be shown Friday night at the Salem Visitor Center\, 2 New Liberty St.\, beginning at 6 p.m. \nThe film ties in the origins of the event and the community’s first elected leader\, Black King Pompey. \nThe main entertainment stage at the Willows on Saturday will open at 9 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. But there’s even more attention on the parade this year\, which will begin at noon and wind through the area until about 1:30 p.m.\, ending with an awards and recognition ceremony\, Wade explained. \n\nThe parade will be led by grand marshal Lucas Miller\, Salem’s new police chief\, along with the Massachusetts Association of Minority Law Enforcement Officers\, the Boston Society of Vulcans (a firefighter association)\, and uniformed police from Beverly\, Lynn\, Peabody\, Salem\, Swampscott and the Essex County Sheriff. They will be followed by a contingent from the Salem Fire Department and Atlantic Ambulance. \nAll of this\, Wade said\, was very intentional. \n“With the way things are going\, trying to build unity between the Police Department and community is something big we’re doing\,” Wade said. “This parade is going to be one of those factors in maintaining — not just building\, but maintaining — through their presence.” \nAnd that’s noteworthy in such a turbulent racial climate\, according to Wade. \n“The relationship itself is spectacular\,” she said\, referencing Salem police. \n“The chief isn’t being honored because he’s some new guy in Salem and we wanted to impress him. He’s being honored because of his commitment to the history and Salem United. He’s even put a presence on our board. \n“In a time when the Black community and the blue community just can’t get together… we’re showing up here on the North Shore that that’s not really a reality here (the tension)\,” Wade said. “We’re working to take this straight across the state of Massachusetts.” \nTucker\, who’s worked to get the House version of the bill passed in recent weeks — Sen. Joan Lovely co-sponsored the Senate version — said the signing of the bill to make Negro Election Day official “is such a well-deserved recognition.” \n“This whole system of governance in the Black community was almost lost to history\,” Tucker said. “We think this is a part of our history\, and people should know. DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends\nAs the 2021 season is coming to a close\, we’d like to have one last get together invite you to a German inspired Oktoberfest. The Munich Octoberfest draws annually up to 6 million visitors. It started as a horse race on the meadow in the city to celebrate the wedding of Prince Ludwig to Princess Theresa on October\, 15th in 1810. It was such a success and people were drawn to the wedding\, the city decided in 1811 to celebrate harvest with an annual agricultural fair (like the Topsfield fair).\nMunich\, being the beer capital of Germany and the inventor of the lager beer\, the event eventual morphed into today’s Bier.\nMore? see the official website in English https://www.oktoberfest.de/\nUnfortunately\, the 2021 event was canceled again as in 2020.\nThe typical foods served at the fair are a whole roasted steer on the spit\, spit roasted Chicken and whole roasted Pigs. \nDue to space limitations and time constraints at the club we refrained form the Ox and pigs on a spit (spit roasted chicken you can get in every supermarket) we decided to have authentic similar specialties.\nWe will be serving\nBavarian Cured bratwurst with Elvira’s Potato salad and Braised Red Cabbage\, Black Forest Knockwurst with Braised apple Sauerkraut and Pretzels. And for dessert\, individual Black Forest Cake.\nTo cover the cost we are asking for a $8 per person\, non refundable when you sign up for this event.\nWe will serve at noon on October 9th 2021. Remember\, because these are special order items on the menu\, if you sign up and don’t show up\, you will still be responsible for paying.\nBring your own adult or non-adult beverage ( beer).and lederhosen and Dirndl are encouraged.\nElvira and Wolfgang \nBTW\nWhat is the difference between Lager and Ale beer?\nUntil the 15 century the Beer yeast available could ferment the wort only in warm temperature. Than a new discovered Yeast could suddenly ferment the wort a lower temperature. So\, the brewer could brew the beer also in wintertime. The beer was then stored in limestone caves near Munich for the prolonged fermentation and storage. These cave where loaded in winter with ice blocks to keep the temperature around 40deg F. That is the reason for the name Lager\, which means warehouse in German. P.S. where did this new yeast came from? Lately\, with modern genome testing it was discovered that that this new type of yeast may have its origin from Patagonia (Chile) where a similar specimen was found. Maybe a fruit fly brought this innovation on Magellan’s ship back to Europe. CHEERS

DESCRIPTION:10 years ago\, the club started the summer solstice celebration to celebrate the start of the summer. It became a popular event every year but unfortunately last year the event had to be canceled and this year the Covid 19 situation was still too unpredictable at the time of planning.\n\nNow with the successful vaccination program in Massachusetts the confidence level is high\, and restrictions removed. So\, I like to celebrate a belated start of the summer with the other successful festivity in 2011: A Spanish Fiesta.\n\nPlease advise if you are interest in this event on July 24 th at 6:00pm. I will limit the participation for a minimum of 30 and maximum of 40 people to keep some social distancing. I will try to stay within a budget of 15$ per person.\n\nThe menu will include authentic Tapas appetizer\, Spanish Paella\, Estofado\, Vegetarian Paella\, and more as well as Flan for dessert. However\, I will also serve a hot smoked\, whole salmon because it became such a signature dish\, I had to offer it.\n\nAll food will be served via buffet like by masked and gloved volunteers to keep this as comfortable for everyone as possible.\n\nPlease send me an email to wscholz@comcast.net\, number of participants\, if you like to help for set up  or preparation or clean up.\n\nRemember hours will count to your working hours assignment.\n\nThis will be the only way to sign up as\, there will be no signup at the club.\n\nLooking forward seeing you all in person in the new normalcy\n\nWolfgang Scholz
