The annual Open Meeting of the SWYC Board of Governors will take place on Saturday evening, May 19th. We will get together for a Meet and Greet at 6pm, followed by a light dinner, a brief BOG Meeting, and finally, a presentation by Dr. Calvin Mires, Visiting Professor at Salem State University.
Above and Below the Waves: Developing Maritime Archaeology Programs in Massachusetts
Dr. Calvin Mires is Professor of Maritime Archaeology, and has run summer field schools in maritime archaeology at Salem State University since 2015. These field programs archaeologically investigated a 19th century sand schooner, Ada K. Damon, at Crane Estate near Ipswich. He has partnered with the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources, The Trustees of Reservations, NPS Salem Maritime National Historic Site and the Tallship, Fame, to provide educational courses for middle school to college students. Before coming to Massachusetts, he was the staff archaeologist for one of only four graduate schools in the country that taught maritime archaeology. He has participated in more than 30 projects around the world covering a myriad of time periods from 4th century BC to WWII, and has trained over a 100 students, many of whom are now leaders in the field.
