New Racing Class offered at Sandy Point Sailing this summer

Sandy Point Sailing Association will be running a racing class this summer. This racing class is designed for teen sailors who want to improve their racing skills or are just starting to race. The class is open to sailors between the ages of 13 and 18 years old who have prior sailing experience. They must have successfully passed an intermediate level sailing class or equivalent, or have demonstrated being comfortable sailing on a 420 or equivalent sailboat.

The class will be using primarily 420 boats and will focus on racing techniques including starts, upwind sailing, rolling tacks, downwind sailing, rules of racing, team racing strategies and so on. There will be short chalk talks before and after each session, plenty of time on the water with drills to practice your skills with the guidance of coaches. You will also have chances to compete in races to practice your skills and gauge your progress against your peers.

This racing class will be held from July 24 to August 4th, from 1 to 4 PM every afternoon, Monday to Friday. The class will sail off the Jubilee Yacht Club.

The class is taught by certified US Sailing Instructors. Students must have basic swimming skills and must provide their own well-fitted personal flotation device (PFD) and closed toe shoes to be worn during each class. Helmet is also recommended to be worn during class.

Cost for this 2-week racing session is $479. Thanks to the generosity of the Beverly Sailing Association, scholarships are available for participants to defray some of this registration cost. These scholarships will cover 50% of the registration cost. Any applicants interested in receiving this scholarship need to submit a 500 word essay describing their interest in sailing. The essay must be submitted via email to [email protected] no later than two weeks before the beginning of the class. We also ask all recipients of the scholarship to write a review at the end of the class with their feedback on the program to assist us in generating enthusiasm for future year participants.

Registration can be done online. Half of the registration ($240) is payable upon registration. The second half is payable one week before the start of the class, or can be waived if the scholarship application has been approved.

Linked are your SWYC Boating Season 2023 Member ID cards. As we have done recently, it’s up to you to print your own card.
Click on the appropriate file (Full and Partner Member, Associate Member, Junior Partner Member or Life Member), then save the file. Once you open the saved file, you can scroll down to find your card(s) (they are alphabetical by last name) or use the search function (press or click the magnifying glass or press Ctrl+F) and enter your name or member number. Take note of the page number that contains your ID card and print only that page or print current page. Repeat for your spouse. Cut out the card and you are done.
