The annual Open Meeting of the SWYC Board of Governors took place on Saturday evening, May 19th. We enjoyed franks and beans and German chocolate cake prepared by Wolfgang, held a brief BOG meeting and then had a great presentation by Dr. Calvin Mires, Visiting Professor at Salem State University.

Calvin brought the field of maritime archeology down to a personal and approachable level. For those interested, his organization SEAMAHP is running a program through Salem State University in collaboration with MBUAR (the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources) on the Maritime Archaeology of the North Shore.

Above and Below the Waves: Developing Maritime Archaeology Programs in Massachusetts

Dr. Calvin Mires is Professor of Maritime Archaeology and has run summer field schools in maritime archaeology at Salem State University since 2015. These field programs archaeologically investigated a 19th century sand schooner, Ada K. Damon, at Crane Estate near Ipswich. He has partnered with the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources, The Trustees of Reservations, NPS Salem Maritime National Historic Site and the Tallship, Fame, to provide educational courses for middle school to college students. Before coming to Massachusetts, he was the staff archaeologist for one of only four graduate schools in the country that taught maritime archaeology. He has participated in more than 30 projects around the world covering a myriad of time periods from 4th century BC to WWII, and has trained over 100 students, many of whom are now leaders in the field.
